The binioù kozh (old binioù), also called binioù bihan (small binioù), as opposed to the binioù braz sometimes designating the Scottish bagpipe in Brittany, or simply binioù, is a bagpipe used mainly in Lower Britain, and traditionally accompanying  the bombarde. The biniou has an extremely short chalumeau (the levriad in Breton), which produces a characteristic  very high pitched sound. This instrument was popular in this region throughout the 19th century. A significant decline  in its practice was observed from the end of the 19th century until the 1930s before experiencing a resurgence  of interest from the 1960s.
