The sapeh (sampet, sampeh undermines) is a traditional lute among the Orang Ulu, who live in "longhouses," along rivers Central Borneo. The boxes are cut from a tree, it can reach over a meter in length. Initially the instrument was a rather undermines rudimentairesavec two strings and only three frets. Its use has been limited to a form of ritualistic music to induce trance. In the last century, the undermining gradually became a social instrument to accompany dances. Today, five-stringed instruments are used with a range of more than three octaves.
