The târ is a plucked string instrument found in Persia (Iran), Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It is a long-necked lute with a body shaped like a double heart. Târ the word means "string" in Persian. Interpreters are called tarzen. The tar is the principal symbol of Azerbaijani culture. In 2003, the Azerbaijani mugham was included in Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and created conditions for the recognition of the tar, and the kamancha Gaval, the three instruments in the mugham. "Bill and musical practice of tar, a stringed instrument with a long handle" were inscribed in 2012 by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
