The sitar is a musical instrument with plucked strings. It is a long-necked lute, a symbol of Hindustani music
Legend attributes its creation to Amir Kushro the fourteenth century. This simple version with three strings, derived from Persian tambur,
has changed over the centuries. In the eighteenth century, a fourth string was added, and in the nineteenth century, tarafs,
sympathetic strings, and imposing form, to play in the durbar, the royal courts.
It is the main instrument of Khyal, Hindustani classical music of North India. In the late 1960s,
the instrument experienced a fleeting vogue in pop music.
